Compost is one the most important ways to improve soil health and productivity. Compost adds carbon and essential nutrients to the soil, increases microbial and mycorrhizal action, and supports the entire soil biome. 

Compost is an essential element of the no-dig weed-free vegetable production system at Zygón. We produce between 30 - 50 cubic meters of compost per year by hand.

During this workshop you will learn the fundamental methods behind good composting at different scales – what ingredients can go into compost, how to achieve the correct balance of Nitrogen and Carbon, and how to achieve and maintain temperatures of 55° - 60° to destroy weed seeds and pathogens.

We will be creating a new compost heap and turning an existing heap. This is physical work – so please expect a workout! It is also quite dirty work – so please wear suitable clothes and footwear (leave the Gucci at home!)
