Living willow fencing
Learn how to make a living willow fence – the ultimate carbon negative barrier!
Time & Location
10 Jan 2026, 10:00 – 13:00
Zygón, K Ústavu, 148 00 Praha-Kunratice, Czechia
About the event
The willow tree (Salix spp.) is a versatile plant traditionally used in house construction and to make woven baskets for transport and storage due to its strength, lightness and flexibility. It has also been used to construct ‘living’ structures for enclosure and defense — from 17th Century China, to the American Civil War.
In this workshop we will be creating living willow fencing to protect some of the vegetable production areas at Zygón. We will be using Salix viminalis cuttings grown at the nearby Landscape Research Institute Výzkumný ústav pro krajinu as part of their ongoing program of biofuel research.
We will also learn about the propagation of Salix species, their uses, relevant tools and techniques.
Please wear suitable clothes and footwear for outdoor work.
